A growing family with young children engaged the Bonick team to determine if a pool, spa, and outdoor entertainment space was feasible in their small University Park, TX backyard. To maximize indoor visual appeal and obscure the garage and driveway, they created a dramatic focal point from a 6’ tall limestone water fountain wall with a series of bronze scuppers. By incorporating the same limestone material used on the house, this wall helps marry the pool with the home as if both were one thought. The soothing sound of water and playful waterspouts further enhance the enjoyment of this “jewel box” garden space for parents and children. To accentuate the clean, modern architecture, the Bonick team used clipped boxwood hedges and topiary spheres in modern pottery bowls between the house and the pool. Large tree-form Hollis were placed along the pool and terrace for privacy and to block unwanted views of adjacent powerlines. Capitalizing on an existing limestone terrace, they designed a state-of-the-art pergola system with integrated retractable sunscreen, manufactured by Renson. Its automated louvres protect the outdoor living area from the elements and can be opened or closed for the desired amount of sun at any time of day.
