10 Outdoor Lighting Gift Ideas
Christmas time is the season for outdoor lighting displays but as festive as they are, part of what makes them so enjoyable is that they are a temporary wonderment, much like fireworks on the fourth of July. Christmas lights are not on our list of gift ideas today. What is on our list are 10 outdoor lighting gift ideas, big and small, that will make your outdoor living areas more enjoyable 365 nights a year.
1.) Outdoor LED Lighting comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from spheres that can rotate through a rainbow of colors, to planters and even what could be considered outdoor sculptures. These modern outdoor lighting options can create a sophisticated and elegant look on your patio or terrace or in your front or backyard or garden. Depending on the item and the size, prices can range from $50 to over $2,000. For those seeking a one-of-a-kind, show-stopping light for outdoors, the Atomium Lamp, pictured [left/right] may be the answer. Designers Hopf and Wortmann created this light for Kundalini of Italy as a tribute to the famous ‘Atomium’ structure designed for Brussels Expo 58.
2.) Inspired by Scandinavian lighthouses, the Lighthouse Outdoor Torches, with their sleek lines, could be the modern-day answer to tiki torches. According to designer Christian Bjørn, “It doesn’t burn with just a little flame, it burns like a fantastic bonfire” and maintains a strong, steady flame even in windy conditions. The lights range in height from 9.5 inches to 26.5 inches and are priced from $90 to $240.
3.) We love Eva Solo’s clean, modern take on a Hurricane Lamp. It has a silicone base to make removing any wax easy (simply flex/bend the base) and a hole at the bottom to let in air to reduce sooting. You can use the handle to suspend it from a hook or tree or simply place it on a table. It measures 6.7 inches high or 10.4 inches with the handle and is priced at $65 (or less if you shop around on the Internet).
4.) Designed by Judson Beaumont, a designer out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Treerings are made from beetle pine, mirrored Plexiglas, and cool fluorescent light. Beetle kill pine is caused by the mountain pine beetle, a type of bark beetle that kills trees while carrying a fungus that stains the wood a bluish-gray hue. Because of its unusual hue, it is considered a lower grade of wood but in recent years has gained popularity because of its eco-friendliness and its beauty and is now used for paneling, flooring, cabinets and other products. Small treerings are $400 (11”h x 15”w) and large treerings are $600 (13”h x 16”w).
5.) This mason-jar-like Sun Jar Solar Lamp from the MoMA store emits a soft, sun-like glow. Powered by an efficient solar cell and using three low-energy LED lights, you simply place the lamp in direct sunlight to charge. On cloudy or rainy days, the lamp can also be charged using standard battery charger (rechargeable battery included). The lamp is water-tight, making it useable outdoors or in. 6.25”h x 4″diameter, $40.
6.) While votives may seem like potentially pedestrian gift, it’s a whole different ball game when it comes from the glass blowers and designers at Simon Pearce. Located in scenic Quechee, Vermont, the Simon Pearce name is synonymous with quality, and it’s simple, classic designs work in both modern and traditional settings. A gift we wouldn’t mind seeing under our Christmas tree is the Silver Lake Tealight ($45), with a design that is inspired by birch trees.
7.) Outdoor floor lamps come in a huge range of designs, from contemporary to traditional. A favorite pick of ours right now is this bronze-finish Trellis Outdoor Floor Lamp that adds both light and textural interest to more contemporary settings. Standing 51 inches high, it uses two 100-watt bulbs and features a 4-way switch. $234 from the Houzz Store.
8.) A gift of professional Landscape Lighting (design and installment by Bonick Landscaping, of course!) is at the same time a grand gesture (and a gift the entire family will enjoy for years to come) and a practical investment. Landscape lighting, done well is about a lot more than slapping a spotlight on a tree or adding solar-powered lights to your walkway. It is a nuanced art that can add beauty and drama to your yard, garden, patio, pool area, and other outdoor spaces. There are many considerations that go into plans for landscape lighting including light quality, appropriate beam spread, fixture placement, color temperature, the layering of lighting and more. 9.) A Cordless Grill Light isn’t exactly the sexiest gift, but it’s one every grill master on your list would appreciate! Nothing is worse than not having enough light to see what you’re cooking. This light has several features we like including: a c-clamp that allows the light to be placed on any vertical, horizontal, or angled surface; a gooseneck that allows versatile light positioning, the light’s wide beam, and the timer that automatically shuts off illumination after 30 minutes. From Hammacher Schlemmer, $49.95.
10.) Last but not least, this 9-inch-long butane-fueled Baton Lighter ($28) from the MoMA store, designed by the Carl Mertens Design Studio, whose work is featured in the Museum’s collection, is a gift anyone can appreciate. It’s sleek design and length make lighting deep hurricane glasses as well as all types of candles and lanterns as easy as the push of a button.
