Dallas Blooms: A Great Example of Landscape Design Planning

The Dallas Blooms Festival at the Dallas Arboretum just wrapped up this past weekend and I couldn’t help but wonder if the people enjoying this lush show of nature ever think about how much planning is required to keep gardens and landscapes looking good year-round. In fact, landscaping services, when well executed aren’t even just about year-round garden and lawn care maintenance, it’s about landscape design: planning for how you want your landscape to look this year, next year, and in five, ten, or fifteen years.

Landscape Design Planning in Action
With regard to Dallas Blooms, the execution (i.e. the planting) of their plan for the Dallas Blooms event began in December when they planted nearly 500,000 Dutch bulbs. Their selection included hyacinths, muscari, daffodils, irises, crocus, and a large array of tulips. Careful consideration is given to bloom times and locations. Forethought is given to early, mid, and late season blooms and placement. According to Dave Forehand, vice president of gardens and visitor services, “Some bulbs bloom early (e.g. daffodils and hyacinths), others bloom mid-season (e.g. tulips such as American Dream, Pink Impression, World’s Fire, and World’s Peace) and some are late bloomers (e.g. tulips such as Big Smile, El Nino, Temple of Beauty, Lipstick Kisses Blend). By staggering the planting times, you have the opportunity to see the beautiful blooms in one bed for a longer time.” Of course, the Dallas Blooms Festival takes up just a portion of the vast grounds of the arboretum, and only during the spring. Forehand and his team have a large list of ongoing maintenance and other planting activities they plan for throughout the year.

Garden and Lawn Care Maintenance
On a much smaller scale, the same is true with your own yard when you hire a landscape design and maintenance company. A landscape design company, which also offers all-inclusive maintenance services, makes the process of keeping your lawn, gardens, and other landscaping looking good year-round easy. For example, at Bonick Landscaping, whether you need both landscape design services and maintenance services, or just maintenance services, you are assigned a personal garden manager. Rather than having to research the various plants you’re interested in by visiting nurseries; determining which plants should go together not just in terms of aesthetics, but also that have the same sunlight, water, and soil conditions; and then then planning your plantings so that you’ll have blooms during each different season in all of your garden spaces, arranged properly for plant height, etc., a garden manager with in-depth knowledge does all this work for you. They have access to a large selection of high-quality plants you won’t find in your local nurseries, as well as a breadth of knowledge and experience to ensure your landscaping investment is maintained year in and year out. Most importantly (at least in our case), your garden manager takes personal ownership of your property, ensuring that your lawn is watered properly in accordance with weather changes. He or she keeps a close eye on the ongoing health of all of your plants, plans for seasonal color in your gardens, and much more.

The moral to the story is: whether you have 66 acres to maintain (like the Dallas Arboretum) or just a fraction of an acre, to keep your yard looking its best year round requires forethought, planning, and knowledgeable ongoing maintenance.
